Child Abuse Prevention — Strategic Communication Support for Physician Leadership
After establishing a successful child abuse prevention program within a large health care system, this physician wanted to leverage her expertise to support broader systems-level changes to support children and families. I worked with her to clarify when and how to share her expertise — including identifying opportunities, preparation for meetings and presentations, and strengthening her online presence. She now holds leadership roles in local and statewide organizations, and actively participates in national conversations about supporting children and families. She also maintains her clinical practice, allowing her to provide front-line insights about what’s working and what’s not to policy discussions and the local, state and national level.
Emotional Connection Resources for Families — Communications Consulting for a Nonprofit
A new nonprofit organization was created to make the findings from decades of research and clinical experience widely available and useful for families. I provided content review and editing to help them translate their expertise into resources that are useful to parents with young children. Organizational leaders and their creative team revised materials based on my suggestions. These materials are currently being focus-group tested.
Sharing Findings from a Academic Research Group — Leading Internal and External Communications
This multidisciplinary research group had important research findings, but leadership was worried that they would be misunderstood. My colleagues and I worked closely with the director and her team — listening deeply to build trust and a solid understanding of technical details as well as past challenges. We guided them through clarifying their stories and strategically sharing them with various audiences. For example, I facilitated a team meeting to share past challenges with staff, resulting in increased trust and support. I led collaboration with the PBS NewsHour for a two-part series about the group’s research, to share their work with a large public audience. I also provided writing, editing, and coordination with a creative team to produce videos, presentations, and web content for outreach and training purposes. I worked closely with subject matter experts to ensure that all products were clear and accurate.
Supporting Leadership Transition — Strategic Communication Support for a Community Nonprofit
The founder of the organization was stepping down from his leadership role. This coincided with a time of growth for the nonprofit, including increased financial responsibilities and new, complex, collaborative relationships. I worked with the new organizational leader to review current needs and challenges, identify priorities, and evaluate how those aligned with the organization’s vision and mission. Through this process I helped the new leadership frame changes and challenges in a way that was clear, truthful, optimistic, and rooted in the organization’s founding documents — which remained unchanged. The result: A new core story, bridging past, present, and future. New leadership was able to share the organization’s story — both through in-person presentations and in writing — with community members, community leaders, and collaborators leading other organizations. This led to renewed community enthusiasm for the organization’s work, increased trust in the organization’s leadership, and successful fundraising to support the organization’s financial needs.
